Montenegro

7–10 Days

A loop that takes you from the postcard coastline of the Bay of Kotor into the mountains, lakes, and canyons most visitors never see. Rent a car for this one, it's by far the best way to do it.

Stop 1

Perast

A quiet, postcard-perfect waterfront town overlooking the Bay of Kotor. An easy, calm way to ease into the coast.

Stop 2

Kotor Old Town

A UNESCO-listed medieval town of narrow alleys and lively squares. Climb the fortress if you have the time, it's worth every step, and this makes the best base for exploring the Bay of Kotor.

Stop 3

Sveti Stefan Viewpoint

One of Montenegro's most iconic views. The island itself is private, but the panoramic view from above is unforgettable on its own.

Leave the coast behind. This is where Montenegro really starts to surprise you.
Stop 4

Lake Skadar National Park

One of our favorite places in the entire country. Take a boat ride, or just sit with the view, either way it earns its spot on the list.

Stop 5

Piva Lake

The drive itself is the attraction here. Turquoise water, dramatic cliffs, winding roads, and tunnels carved straight through the mountains.

Stop 6

Durmitor National Park

A paradise for nature lovers. Mountain landscapes, scenic viewpoints, hiking trails, and fresh alpine air.

Stop 7

Black Lake, Žabljak

Give it at least half a day. Walk around the lake, take in the quiet, or rent a kayak if the weather is on your side.

Our Tips

  • Rent a car. It's by far the best way to explore Montenegro properly.
  • Give yourself 7 to 10 days so you're not rushing between stops.
  • The drive from Piva Lake to Durmitor National Park is one of the most beautiful roads we've ever driven, leave extra time just to stop and look.
